The UK Apprentice Minimum Wage Rule (2026/27 Rates)
Apprentice minimum wage rules are based strictly on a combination of your age and how long you have been on your current apprenticeship:
| Apprentice Category | Year 1 (First 12 Months) | Year 2+ (After 12 Months) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aged Under 19 (16–18) | £8.00 / hr | £8.00 / hr | Apprentice rate applies for entire duration until 19th birthday. |
| Aged 19 to 20 | £8.00 / hr | £10.85 / hr | Mandatory Pay Rise: Jumps to full 18–20 National Minimum Wage. |
| Aged 21 and Over | £8.00 / hr | £12.71 / hr | Mandatory Pay Rise: Jumps to full National Living Wage. |
3 Critical Legal Rights Every UK Apprentice Must Know
- 1. Paid College and Training Time: By law, you must be paid your normal hourly rate for all off-the-job training, college classes, and study sessions required by your apprenticeship. If an employer docks your pay for college days, they are committing a minimum wage violation.
- 2. Maximum Hours & Working Time: Apprentices aged under 18 cannot work more than 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week, and are entitled to a 30-minute break if working more than 4.5 hours.
- 3. No Deductions for Uniforms/Tools: If your employer deducts the cost of tools, uniforms, or safety gear from your wages, and that deduction drops your effective hourly pay below £8.00/hr (or your Year 2 statutory rate), it is illegal.
